Leiden International Students’ Symposium on Democracy

on

June 18 – 19, 2011
Lorentzzaal, A.144, Faculty of Law
Steenschuur 25, Leiden, The Netherlands

Democracy is generally understood to imply a form of government. However, the expression demands a broader definition. For the purpose of the Symposium, the expression democracy means the inherent power of a people, without the support of which no government, however strong, can function. Each country has a democracy, despite its government.

The question arises: How do we empower our democracies?

At the Symposium:

  • A review of Democracy in various countries
  • Taking a stand for empowering Democracy
  • Adoption and declaration of the Leiden Youth Charter on Democracy to be presented to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations
